I promise it’ll be 1000x more flattering than anything else you could pick. Classic family portrait for the holiday card is what I strive for in the first 5-10 minutes of a session when everyone is focused. Hats, scarves, statement necklaces and earrings are a perfect way to take your outfit to the nest level. They make an outfit look polished, pulled together and complete. And they are a perfect way to add a pop of color. Ah, the endless 'what to wear for the family photo' debate!

For shoes, opt for booties or ballet slippers. (Light blue or soft magenta make great color choices.) Style hair with white bows. A bright yellow tee, blue jeans, and gorgeously solid boots make up this dude-approved outfit. Take a leaf from dad’s look with your little guy’s matching outfit, simply swapping out the boots for a more kid-friendly pair. Rosamund Pike smiled while leaving a fitting session at Dior during Paris Fashion Week on Sep. 26, 2022. Her long black dress and cropped navy jacket were perfect for the fall weather.

Choose Subtle Patterns

Too few colors and you run the risk of boring and bland (white t-shirt kind of thing). Too many and you run the risk of your eye not knowing where to look and the photo feeling “messy”. Fall is upon us which means the annual family picture session for the Christmas card isn’t too far behind (if you haven’t already taken yours). So, here are some tips for you fellow extra-curvaceous women trying to work out what on earth to wear for a photo session. Here is another winter family picture idea for large families. To avoid the possibility of broken arms, scratches, and cuts, it’s best not to plan any crazy, adventurous activities the week before pictures.

Have fun playing stylist and let your family’s personality shine. Patterns look nice in photos, but only if used in moderation. A good rule of thumb is to only have a couple of patterned pieces. Sometimes a single watch or a bracelet can add completeness to the image. However, this isn’t relevant for babies, whose delicate bodies and facial features look their best being non-embellished.

This was a little bit sad but I was so happy that I had purchased this dress from you a little while ago. On May 11 my grandma who was just shy of 103 years old passed away and her favorite color was orange. So we all decided to wear something orange and bright and cheery for her funeral. Everyone thought this dress represented exactly what she loved. It’s so true that our kids will never judge us and think we look bad in pictures even if we don’t think we look great.

MAXI DRESSES

This dad is holiday-approved with a long-sleeved pink button down and navy blue shorts. As for mama, keep it simple with this look that is easily converted to maternity with the swapping of a shirt! Pair a drapey, charcoal-gray cardigan with a white maternity top. Wear with black leggings and chic brown boots.

As you’ll see below, we’ve been taking family portraits for several years, so I’ve picked up a few tips and tricks along the way. Okay, this is a personal preference, but I’ve found over the years that any time clients wear tons of blue, something looks off to me. Maybe because I tend to edit warm, and love to play with the golden sun, and blue sucks up the warmth from the image. So if you’re wanting to add blue to your session, stick to only one article of clothing . That sounds funny to say, but I just mean they are muted and not bright. The example below shows a family who added only one blue item and it’s a great shade!

When models wear clothes of identical color, they may merge into one visually off-putting spot. R.H. Elias is a freelance writer, aspiring author, and freelance transcriptionist. If you typically wear glasses, wear them for your session. But if you have polarized or transitional lenses, consider taking them off. Dark glasses will cover your eyes in the photos. Avoid outfits that are too formal for your setting. If you are in a natural area, a tuxedo, formal dress, tie/bowtie, might feel out of place.

I share all of this advice because I want your outfits to compliment and help make the photo, not detract from it. Also, the color palette you choose will affect your appearance and the overall look of your photo. If possible, discuss the overall theme with everyone in the family prior to the photo session. Every member of the family should be on the same page when it comes to the desired color palette for the group photo. If you want to dial the holiday spirit up a notch, coordinated sweaters is a fun idea too.

Okay, let’s get to my favorite places to find outfits for mom for photos. This includes jewelry for mom and a flower crown for the daughter that coordinates with the clothes. Notice mom has a mint skirt but the jewelry I chose has more of a peachy/pink color because I want it to coordinate with daughter’s dress. Please Avoid…

Lets look at some essential color palettes for any season and any setting. If you want a maternity family photo session, you need to prepare the clothes that emphasize the bump in a flattering, delicate way. The best choice is airy dresses of pastel colors.

My images are all about connection so I want to see your arms wrapped around your little girl, not a floating baby. You probably already know this, but it’s super important not to wear any words, logos, or characters of any kind on your clothing. Even that tiny Nike or Carhartt logo in the top corner of your t-shirt is going to draw the eye there rather than the subject of the photo… your family! That’s the entire point of your photo session so let’s keep the attention on you. Don’t wear a pattern that’s too big, it overwhelms the subject.

A session at a farm while dressed in cowboy boots and cute sundresses would look perfect in a rustic home. But the same image would feel out of place in a contemporary home. This is also where you can add your pops of color.
