Fashions of the 1820s favored lightweight silks and cottons in increasingly bright patterns and colors as the decade continued . Saturated hues such as “Turkey red” and richly printed calicoes were in vogue (Bassett 38-39). In particular, there was a lavish use of laces, net, and gauze. Machine-made net had been patented in 1808, and this novelty fabric saw an explosion in its use . Blonde lace, a bobbin lace woven from silk instead of linen, was also extremely fashionable . Evening dresses, especially during the early 1820s, were often of a nearly transparent gauze or net worn over a colored satin slip, giving them a shimmering effect (Fig. 11) (C.W. Cunnington 34).
